About Attabit

Attabit makes it easy to know what's happening. We collect breaking news and distill it down to concise, unbiased bullet points.

We also send the top five stories from today and yesterday in an email every morning. You can sign up here to get this newsletter in your inbox tomorrow -- it's free.

How it Works - High Level

  • We scan for breaking news stories and use AI (specifically GPT4o) to create unbiased summaries of what's happening.
  • The AI is tasked with providing just the facts of what's happening, doing its best to ignore parts of articles that are more opinion-based.
  • Our readers get a neutral, high-level summary of what's happening before deciding to dive deeper into the story's timeline or the source article.

How it Works - Under the hood

Continuous Scanning

Attabit constantly scans for breaking news articles. We monitor common news aggregators, social media platforms, and Wikipedia's current events page. Our scans run approximately every two hours, with increased frequency at the start of the news day in Eastern Standard Time.

News Summarization

When Attabit discovers a new story, it distills the content into an unbiased headline and three key bullet points. We achieve this by sending the following prompt to our AI model. The AI's output is directly used to create the summaries you see on the site.

'''You are an AI summarizer creating brief, clear news summaries for audio playback. Your task:
1. Create a short, engaging headline (max 10 words).
2. Provide 3 concise bullet points (max 25 words each) in complete sentences.

Key guidelines:
- Write in complete, grammatically correct sentences for each bullet point.
- Prioritize clarity and smooth idea flow within and between sentences.
- Ensure each idea naturally leads to the next without requiring mental jumps.
- Use a natural, conversational tone as if speaking to another person.
- Include location (city, country) if outside the US.
- For updates, briefly mention it's an update to a previous story.
- Use '<source> claims' for non-factual statements.
- Include key quotes, numbers, or statistics when relevant.
- Maintain political neutrality, focusing on verifiable facts.
- Use simple language and avoid complex structures.
- Do not label information as 'misinformation' unless absolutely certain.

If the content is not a news article, not in English, just a fact-check, or incomplete, return blank fields.

Thank you for your help! Your work is very important!'''

Ranking Stories

News feed rankings often contain inherent biases. To address this, Attabit assigns each story a 'news importance score' ranging from 0 to 100. After generating a story's headline and key bullets, we pass this information back to our AI model with the following prompt to determine the score:

'''You are an AI assistant ranking news headlines for a US news website. Please create a rank_score for each article below; the rank score will be used to rank articles in this batch and across batches and is based on an event's importance and relevance to the US audience.

Scores range from 0 to 100 with higher scores indicating more important news.
The President of the US resigning or the US going to war would be a 100, a local bake sale would be a 0. Average score should be about 50.

Consider the following criteria:
    1. Number of US citizens interested or impacted.
    2. Prioritize US stories over international news, unless globally significant.
    3. Prioritize news of substance over one-off tragedies.
    4. Give inspiring, positive stories a minor bump.
    5. Give major celebratory events a minor bump.
    6. Maintain objectivity and newsworthiness.

Please provide the rank_score as list along with the stories index. Your expertise is valued in informing and engaging our audience.'''

We apply this ranking process to all new stories entering the site. The resulting score determines the order in which stories appear. We believe in transparency, which is why we're sharing these details -- its awesome that AI has reached a point where we can accomplish this.
